Picasso was born in Malaga on October 25, 1881 at number 15 of the Plaza de la Merced, where the Museum House and the Foundation are currently located. His father José Ruiz, who was a professor of drawing at the School of Arts and crafts “San Telmo” in Malaga and curator of the Municipal Museum of Malaga was the one who initiated him.

The artist was a precocious talent and from the hand of his father he begins to elaborate his first paintings: Port of Malaga, copy of the one of the work Twilight in the port of Malaga of Emilio Ocón, painted in 1878. Shortly afterwards, the family moved to La Coruña, where a terrible tragedy occurred when Picasso’s sister died.
